TYPICAL CLP government –  Biggest bunch of wankers in the Northern Territory.

SPORTS Minister and Assistant Treasurer Nathan Barrett has admitted sending a female constituent two sexually explicit videos of himself in a bathroom.  Mr Barrett is also Young Territorians Minister.

He is seen in the two short videos, sent via Facebook and obtained by the NT News, masturbating with his left hand.

The recipient of the video claims she did not solicit the sexually explicit messages.

She claimed she was in a vulnerable place and that Mr Barrett had promised her a job when he became Treasurer.

“He manipulated me,” she told the NT News. “I didn’t ask for the videos.”

Northern Territory Sports Minister and Assistant Treasurer Nathan Barrett has resigned from Cabinet after sending videos of himself engaged in a sex act to a constituent.

Key points:

  • Mr Barrett says he is “very disappointed” by his actions
  • Says he was in a relationship with the woman for a short period
  • NT Chief Adam Giles says Barrett ‘had to go’

Mr Barrett has apologised for his actions, which he said involved a woman he was with for a short period.

“I endeavour to represent my community effectively and improve the lives of the people of Blain and the entire Northern Territory.”

He admitted to being engaged in an “inappropriate relationship”.

“While this is essentially a private matter that my wife and I have been working through for some time, I unreservedly apologise to my family, the people of my electorate of Blain, my parliamentary colleagues, the party, and the men and women in the Department of Sport and Recreation and Youth Affairs,” he said.

‘Barrett should reconsider future in politics’

He said his Government had recently passed legislation to protect people from so-called sexting.

“Sexting is not a relationship issue. Sexting goes beyond that.”

Mr Barrett was due to speak to media this morning about his actions but the conference was called off shortly before it was due to begin.

The announcement that he had resigned came less than an hour after the media conference was cancelled.

CLP Federal Member for Solomon Natasha Griggs said Mr Barrett should now reconsider his future in politics.

“I feel very sorry for his family but as politicians we have to make sure that our community has faith and believes that we wouldn’t do the wrong thing,” Ms Griggs said.

Mr Barrett, a married father of three, apologised to his family, constituents and Territorians for “engaging in an inappropriate relationship”.

He also apologised “to the woman with whom I was involved with for a short period” and said he was “very disappointed” with his actions.

“I endeavour to represent my community effectively and improve the lives of the people of Blain and the entire Northern Territory,” he said. “I did not live up to these standards when I engaged in an inappropriate relationship.”

He said he would work to rebuild trust with his constituents, while seeking counselling.

Mr Barrett, who was elected at a by-election in 2014, reportedly has a deep commitment to his local church and presents to the electorate as a committed family man.

His resignation from cabinet is a further blow to the beleaguered Country Liberals government, which faces an election in less than three months.

Mr Barrett is the second frontbencher to resign this year. Former deputy Chief Minister Willem Westra van Holthe was forced to stand down in February after it was revealed he had planned to invest more than $500,000 with a subsidiary of Vietnamese company CT Group, which was seeking to develop a 10,000-hectare dragon fruit farm in the top end.

He was also in a relationship with an employee of the company at the time.

“If true, it’s reprehensible and I’m even more disappointed in the former minister’s behaviour,” he said last night about the netball incident.

Earlier in the day, Mr Giles called Mr Barrett’s explicit video “harassment to young women”.

“Quite frankly he had to go. There’s no other choice,” he said.

“I don’t want a minister in the Northern Territory Parliament who behaves like this. This issue goes beyond a relationship issue, this issue is a matter of … public interest because it’s crossing over those elements of what I would call harassment to young women.

“Sexting is not on … I think it puts women down and I won’t tolerate it.”

It was revealed yesterday that Mr Barrett, a married father of three, sent a video of himself masturbating in a bathroom to a female constituent in the middle of the afternoon.

The woman said he had “manipulated” her, took advantage of her when she was vulnerable and offered her a job when he became Treasurer.

Mr Giles said yesterday that allegations he used his Government-issued phone for the production of the video would be looked at later. He said Mr Barrett was not emotionally well.

“It’s fair to say Nathan is not in a good space,” he said. “His mental and emotional health is a serious concern right now. He needs to go and deal with his own issues and work with his family.”

Mr Barrett, a former teacher, is deeply committed to his local church and seen as a strong family man throughout his Palmerston electorate.

In a statement yesterday, he said he would be seeking counselling and that he was “disappointed” with his “actions”.

WHAT THEY’RE SAYING

Chief Minister Adam Giles: “This issue is a matter of … public interest because it’s crossing over those elements of what I would call harassment to young women.”

Nathan Barrett: “I unreservedly apologise to my family, the people of my electorate of Blain, my Parliamentary colleagues, the party. I will now work to rebuild the trust of the people of Blain whilst I seek counselling.

Former Labor leader Delia Lawrie: “Seriously? This creep thinks a resignation from Cabinet is enough? No. Resign from Parliament.”

Solomon MP Natasha Griggs: “Actions like this are not acceptable.”

Former Minister Daryl Manzie: “It disappoints me, a guy who has all that potential. I believe the party should review their position with him because what he has done is totally unacceptable as far as community standards go.”

CLP candidate Giovanna Webb: “We as women are very much together that this is unacceptable behaviour.”
